A FABULOUS performance from seven Samurai students saw them take three gold medals, two silvers and a bronze at the British Schools Championships in Sheffield.

The Wyre Forest club recorded their best ever result at the tournament.

Even more impressively, Bewdley High School finished sixth overall thanks to the efforts of Samurai out of the 400 teams which took part.

They would have come even higher if Darcie Hancocks had not been ineligible due to being on the England Squad, and with Arran Gulliver unable to take part and Brendan Crummy having recently moved on to Stourbridge College.

Hettie Tinsdale was the first Samurai player on the medal podium.

The Bewdley High girl had three maximum point wins on her way to the final, where she lost to a tremendous throw early on, but was still pleased with her first national medal.

Sian Bobrowska, from Nunnery Wood High School, has been on the verge of major success for some time and finally made the breakthrough.

After a good win in her first contest, she scored a tremendous maximum point throw in her second match with a changing hip throw.

This put her into the semi-final where she scored another maximum point throw to reach the final, and then used the same hip throw again in the final to gain yet another maximum point score and the gold medal.

Stourport High School’s Charlotte Read became the second Samurai player to take a gold medal when she won her category in thoroughly convincing style.

Some recent work being coached by Nigel Tinsdale and Paul Jones at the club has clearly paid off as she won all four of her contests by maximum points without ever looking troubled to make it two golds and a silver so far for the club.

Toni Poulsom put Haybridge High School on the map by winning a bronze medal with some good judo.

Leah Grosvenor, from Hagley Catholic School, had some very good wins early on to reach the final of her category but had to settle for silver.

Brendan Crummy bounced back from a semi-final defeat to take bronze.

The icing on the cake for Bewdley was the performance of Rory Gulliver, who also powered to gold.
