TALENTED teenager Jerry Mongan faces his biggest fight yet after booking his place in the finals of ABA English National Schoolboy Championships.

The Stourport-based traveller, 14, produced an impressive display to see off Sean Arkwright on a split decision after three rounds.

Victory was all the more eye-catching as Mongan defeated his Salisbury ABC rival, despite Arkwright boasting home advantage in Liverpool.

The teenager now faces Wayne Owen of Berkshire’s Pinewood ABC in the final of the 54kg category at Huddersfield Sports Centre, where he will be hoping to win the fabled Lonsdale golden gloves.

The gifted Wyre Forest fighter, who is home schooled and is a member of Priory Park ABC, is set to be backed by a large following.

Brother Michael Mongan said: “I thought Jerry was the better fighter overall. Both where throwing counter punches in the first two rounds, but in the third they went for it. But Jerry had the edge and got the decision.”

Jerry has fought through six tough bouts to reach the final stage, defeating Wolverhampton’s Connor Hinks, Mitchell Lowe and then sealed the Midlands title with a unanimous points win over the Birmingham Irish fighter Jack Tuite, before getting past Bobby Carter and Murtaza Nadeem.
