BEWDLEY Town boss Craig Payton threw a massive spanner in Lye Town’s title hopes - then promised to do their West Midlands Premier rivals a favour.

Two goals from Chris Hough and another from Chris Seekins saw Bewdley to a 3-2 win although the visitors did pull two goals back in stoppage time after substitute Dan Jones had been dismissed for two yellow cards in the space of 10 minutes.

But joint boss Payton, whose side have now beaten leaders Lye and rivals Wolverhampton Casuals and Sporting Khalsa this season, said they were now targeting the other member of the promotion-chasing quartet Shawbury.

“In fairness to the league and to Lye we owe it to them to do our best to get a result against Shawbury in a couple o0f week’s time.”

Bewdley, who drew with Wednesfield 1-1 on Saturday have a busy seven-day spell starting at home to Bustleholme on Saturday, entertaining Malvern Town on Tuesday then a League Cup quarter final with Bustleholme next Thursday.

“We’ll do what’s right for Bewdley and rest a few players as well want to do well in the cup but we also want the scalp of Shawbury. I really do wish the season was starting again because we should be up there challenging not hoping to get into the top eight.

“Tuesday was great win for us, Lye are a hardworking side who really take the game to you but we stood up to it and I thought we were the better side in the second half.

“It’s important now that we keep our focus for Saturday as teams at the bottom will be hoping we get a result against Bustleholme.”
