WYRE Forest pair Meg Tinsdale and John McMahon was in great form at the Midlands Regional Youth Championships in Corby.

McMahon swam a quite amazing 100 metre and 50m butterfly races after a really tough season of set-backs, illnesses and injuries.

Tinsdale also swam magnificently at this stage of the season, reached four finals out of the six events she entered.

She also topped this off with a silver in the 50m freestyle, as well as second in the open event, dipping under the national time for the second time this season.

Tinsdale also just missed out on qualification time for 100m freestyle by 0.5 of a second.

Calum Tinsdale was a noticeable absentee after he was unfortunately injured going into this meet and had to withdraw from all events.

In the ASA Midland Age Group Championships, the club had nine swimmers compete over the course during two long weekends in Coventry.

All of the swimmers equipped themselves well during preparation for the event, but for most – managing the nerves on the day was the main focus.

For six of the swimmers, with it being their first taste of Regional, this really was a step up in competition.

Emily Seymour-Perry (200m/100m backstroke), Nicole Tanser-Voets (200m/100m backstroke), Olivia Jay (100m breaststroke, 200m IM, 200m breaststroke), Abbie Rowley (100m freestyle), Emma Osborne (100m freestyle) and Matthew Newey (100m backstroke, 200m IM) all gave a great account of themselves and soaked up the pressure and gained valuable experience.

Helena Shackleton, who competed in the 200m individual medley, 200m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke, has had more experience of at this level competition than the others and proved she is regaining her form by swimming confidently with new race strategies in each of her events.

Unfortunately, Izzy Bowers (200m/100m backstroke, 200m freestyle)could not be there on the day.

Harvey Thompson (100m freestyle), who is currently going through rehabilitation for a broken leg, is not quite ready to compete yet and unfortunately missed out on this occasion.

Head coach Mark Wilmott said: “This was an amazing achievement from the swimmers participating throughout each meet.

“We have doubled the amount of regional qualifiers from last season and with ever more younger swimmers coming through the ranks.

“ I’m looking forward to continuing this trend."
