TEENAGE boxing sensation Jerry Mongan is ready to represent England in style after officially being picked for the squad going to the European Schoolboy Championships.

The 14-year-old is part of an eight strong squad which will be fighting in Hungary at the end of the month.

Mongan, who trains at Dudley’s Priory Park Boxing Club, attended a training camp at the weekend before the squad was chosen.

It has been a fantastic year for the Stourport fighter.

He saw off some of the country’s best young boxers to win ABA National Schoolboys Champion in the 54 kilogram category.

He then won the British title at the Three Nations tournament.

Mongan then impressed selectors by seeing off his opposite number from Ireland, Owen McDonagh, in County Mayo.

Brother Michael Mongan said: “Jerry is over the moon, he thought he may represent England but not as soon as this.

“England have a lot of very good young boxers coming through and there was some stiff competition for the squad.

“He’s had a remarkable season. At the start of the year I don’t think he imagined he’d win a national title, win in Ireland and represent his country at a major tournament.”
