STOURPORT’S Jerry Mongan completed a brilliant season by winning bronze in his category at the European Schoolboy Championships in Hungary.

The Priory Park fighter (pictured), 14, defeated Ireland’s Michael McDonagh in the 54 kilogram quarter-finals to set-up a meeting with Russia’s Emin Khataev.

However, in a very close semi-finals he was narrowly edged out on a split decision.

Mongan’s left jab was a potent weapon in this contest, and a solid start to the second round put him on what looked like a course to victory, but his Russian opponent did just enough to sneak the verdict.

The tournament proved to be successful for team England as John Johnson and Adam Hussain won gold medals.

Hussain, who also represents Pinewood Starr Boxing Club in home counties, overcame Hungarian Renato Rostas 3-0 to win at 38.5kg.

John Johnson automatically won gold when his Belarusian opponent Aliaksei Alfiorau pulled out of the final due to an injury.

England team manager Martin Webb said: “This has been a successful tournament for England.

“Four medals, including two golds, is a good return from a team of seven young boxers. England performed exceptionally well.”

Bronze finished a fine season for Mongan.

The teenager made his dream of glory come true after becoming ABA National Schoolboy Champion.

He saw off Wayne Owen from Berkshire’s Pinewood ABC on a split decision in the final of his weight category.

Mongan then won a play-off to represent England at the Three Nations tournament and overpowered Scotland’s Tobias Haglan in Manchester.

He also defeated an opponent in Ireland as part of his preparations for the European Championships.

Brother Michael Mongan said: “Jerry’s disappointed not to have gone further in Hungary, he was unlucky to be edged out and had fought well.

“But to win a European bronze is a great achievement.

“At the start of the year he wanted to win the schoolboy title but he has done so much more than that.

“He’lll have a few weeks and will it will all start again.

“There is a great generation of English boxers coming through but you can’t afford to rest on your laurels.”
