Beard and Harris carry Bewdley to victory

BEWDLEY maintained their title push in Worcestershire Division Two with a six wicket win over Enville on Saturday.

Matt Cowdery won an important toss in a game reduced to 33 overs a side by morning rain, and asked the visitors to bat.

Enville’s innings never really got going, though several batsmen made useful contributions.

Andy Platt (1-44) and Callum Wilson (1-17) took early wickets, and then Jack Mills and Simon Mauger were able to ensure that Bewdley’s target would be a modest one.

Mauger was rewarded with excellent figures of 4-33 and Mills supported him manfully with 1-40. Bewdley’s ground fielding was very good with Gareth Lewis and Rob Crane to the fore and the thoughtful field placings meant that only one boundary was scored in the last ten overs of the innings.

Bewdley’s reply began with a steady partnership of 32 between Mauger and Paul Beard.

Two wickets fell and Rob Combes then played a rather frenetic innings of 34, and at 78-4 there was just a whiff of imminent collapse.

However, Beard (48no) and Mike Harris (30no) saw Bewdley home with a judicious mixture of sturdy defence and sparkling attack Bewdley travel to Feckenham on Saturday (1pm start).
