STOURPORT maintained pole position in the Warwick Printing Midland Hockey League Midlands Division One with a 4-0 win over Telford and Wrekin.

The game saw several strange umpiring decisions and both teams were resigned to playing most of the first half in midfield.

Only a well-taken Dan Hurley opportunist strike, set up by an early restart free-hit from Chris Hill, unlocked the deadlock for the Kingsway side on 30 minutes.

With both teams struggling to come to terms with the officials, neither side really got into top gear.

A second-half brace from David Knott and a tap-in from 17-year-old Dan Petrie finished off the visitors from Shropshire, who were coached by the ex-Stourport coach Steve Floyd.

The Wyre Forest outfit also managed to keep their first clean sheet of the season.

Stourport were defensively sound with a tireless and selfless game from man of the match Phil Baldwin and dependable performances from goalkeeper Alex Cook and defenders Mark Moss, Andy Cavendish, Chris Parry, Will Terry and Jamie Miller.

Chris Hoare and Matt Derbyshire Stourport also put in the hard work to close down the possession by the Telford defence.

This Saturday, Stourport only travel to Cradley to play local rivals Old Halesonians at Ormaston Forge Academy (1.30pm start).
