CYCLING coach Alan Griffiths’ passion for passing on his love of riding has seen him named Wyre Forest District Council’s volunteer of the year.
The 74-year-old is a founding member of Severn Valley Velo CC, which hosts track and road races, and has been the club’s coach since it began in 2009.
Mr Griffiths also devotes his time to coaching at Stourport High School as part of British Cycling’s Go Rider youth initiative, as well as running a women’s session on Wednesday mornings and coaching on Saturdays.
He said: “I am relatively late to cycling. I played football, cricket, rowed and did many other sports but I was looking for another sport when I finished playing squash in my 50s.
“We had bought my 13-year-old a bike and wanted to take him out and I never looked back.
“The award came as a complete surprise to me but I am delighted to receive it.”
