IT HAS been another big year for Samurai Judo Club as they are this year’s winners at Wyre Forest District Council’s Sports Awards.

Samurai have scooped three titles at last night’s presentation evening, earning the accolade of club of the year.

Gifted young members Darcie Hancocks and Nathan Gallacher have respectively earned the titles junior sportswoman and sportsman for 2014.

Samurai’s national profile has lifted after successfully running the British National Team Championships in Walsall on the behest of the British Judo Association.

The Kidderminster-based club has hosted the British Special Needs Championships, British Masters and 10/11 Championships.

On the competition mat, Samurai are ranked second in the BJA’s medals table for 2014, while Paul Jones has become their first sixth dan.

Golds for Nathan, 14, at the Midlands, North West and Welsh Opens have sealed a fine year for him.

A step up in weight class did not stop the flow of medals, as he earned silver at Scottish and London Opens.

Darcie, 12, has enjoyed an incredible period and won a host of silverware.

The youngster became the first person to win titles at the British Judo and School Kata Championships, and after topping the Worcestershire medals table in 2013, she is set to repeat that feat.
