KIDDERMINSTER Olympic star Amy Smith made a splash at the Wyre Forest Sports Awards after being named Senior Sportswoman of the Year.

The 27-year-old former Franche Primary School pupil retired from competitive swimming earlier this year following a string of achievements including winning silver medals in the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games and Gold and Silver medals in the 2010 European Championships.

But Her proudest moment came when she represented Team GB and qualified for the final of the 50 metre and 100 metre freestyle events at the London Olympic Games in 2012, which showed how far she had come from when she joined up with Kidderminster swimming club at the age of eight.

Now living in Lougborough with partner and fellow swimmer Joe, she holdss busy holding masterclasses and teachesing swimming techniques.

Amy also works with county sports partnerships and goes into schools to teach.

She said: “I am delighted with this award. It is really great to receive such an acknowledgement, especially back in my home town.

“My parents still live in Kidderminster as do a lot of my family and they are all really pleased for me.”

“Obviously, Kidderminster is where it all started for me so hopefully I can encourage and inspire a few future Olympians from the town.”
