AS THE first half of the Kidderminster Table Tennis League season draws towards its close, title favourites Bromley remain undefeated at the top of Division One with a 100 per cent record.

Cookley B, who have been greatly boosted by signings from the former Hagley side, are in second place, having suffered just one reverse in ten matches.

Harriers D are two points behind on 29 points.

Jim’s Gym Z are going well in fourth place but Broadheath Belters find themselves in fifth, having been hampered by player availability issues.

Bromley’s Steve Horton sits on top of the averages with a 100 per cent record, but Cookley B’s Chris Hewitt has also been in excellent form with just one defeat in 24.

In Division Two, Baggeridge have a perfect ten from ten record at the top of the table, with 37 points.

Second-placed Cookley C are also undefeated but have drawn two of their games, so are three points behind.

Hot on their heels are Harriers X who are a point behind on 33.

Cookley C’s Chris Metti is the player to beat in Division Two with the only 100 per cent record.

All the other Cookley C players have been performing strongly, including young Ollie Lowe, while Wordsley A’s John Cumbers and Peter Mole remain consistent.

Cookley A’s George Carroll narrowly missed out on the chance to become Worcestershire Junior Boys champion in the closest-fought county final for several years at the weekend.

In the under-18 county competition held at St Egwin’s Middle School in Evesham on Sunday he lost an epic five-set final to Craig Witheford 22-20 in the decider.

Carroll got off to a slow start against the steadier Evesham-based player and soon found himself 2-0 down.

He recovered to narrow the arrears in the third set but had to save a match point in the fourth to take the match to a decider.

Each player had opportunities take the title as the game edged towards its nail-biting conclusion but it was Carroll who made the fatal error with the score at 20-21.

Witheford also won the cadet boys trophy (under-15) and the doubles with his brother Alastair to round off an excellent day for him.

Few other Kidderminster junior players entered the championship but Dublin Cooper recorded a victory.
