THE quartet of Bob Lucas, John Westley and brothers Steve and Phil Lau won Cleobury Mortimer GC’s first tournament of 2015 when they left it late to clinch the Men’s Yellowball competition.

The competitions sees teams of four trying to record the best two stableford score at each hole, with the yellowball counting for double points.

The first group out, who had the worst of the conditions, was Ian Baker, Phil Baker, Dan Berwick and Richard Kimberlain.

Under Baker’s captaincy they shot 109 points, which was a great effort considering the frosty conditions.

The were, however, just pipped to top spot by the second-to-last group out.

The experienced Lucas, his good friend Westley and the awesome Cleobury double act of the Lau brothers thought they had blown it on the last with just three points scored.

Lucas said: “That was some of the toughest conditions we have ever played in here at Cleobury and I have been a member for over 20 years.

“The team played some great golf and it’s an honour to win the first competition of 2015.”

Yellowball final standings: 1 John Westley, Phil Lau, Bob Lucas, Steve Lau – 120 points; 2 Phil Baker, Dan Berwick, Ian Baker, Richard Kimberlin – 109 points.
