SAMURAI Judo Club member Laura Dangerfield was in the medals again after she reached the final of the North-West Senior Open in St Helens.

She won silver after being disqualified in the final for a technical infringement.

The Redditch-based fighter had made a good start and soon booked her place in the quarter-finals.

Dangerfield took maximum points in both the quarter-final and the semi-final to reach the final against a player from the British Army who she had beaten at their only previous encounter, last month at the English Open.

She started the contest well but had forgotten to remove a necklace and was punished with a technical disqualification, so had to be content with the silver medal.

Meanwhile, Rob Alloway also competed and won the bronze in the men’s lightweight veterans section.

He also recently took part in a local event in Birmingham, winning the gold medal there, including a nice shoulder throw in the final.

The Samurai parents and veterans session has been doing well recently and three of the senior men have gained their brown belts and then went on to pass their black belt theory exams, although they have yet to do the contest element.

Paul Spencer and Mark Flello have been competing as well, and ended up against each other in the final of the British Masters Championships in the section for players below black belt when the event was held at the Glades last October, with Paul winning the gold that day.

James Walker, who won bronze at the British Masters, also gained his brown belt and passed the black belt theory.

Players train twice a week on special sessions under coach Nigel Tinsdale, a third level black belt and former British Squad player.
