RAIN interruptions prevented Stourport from taking an opening day win against Wormelow, as they got their Worcestershire County League Division Two campaign off to a solid start.

Skipper Craig Siwicki may have regretted his decision to ask the visitors to make first use of a superb Stourport pitch as Wormelow piled on 291-7 from their 50 overs. Lee Waldron proving the pick of the bowlers with 3-53.

In reply, Stourport lost both openers with 39 on the board.

This saw Ryan Delo joined South African Kevin Renecke at the crease and they then took the attack to the Wormelow bowlers with a 172 run partnership for the third wicket before the latter was dismissed for a brilliant 99. Rain saw Stourport chasing a reduced winning draw target as they finished on 266-3 in the 43rd over to comfortably take the winning draw, Delo remaining unbeaten on 92.

This Saturday, Stourport travel to fellow promoted side Harborne.

Stourport seconds were also frustrated by the rain as they had to settle for a winning draw at Belbroughton.

l Meanwhile, Cookley got off to a winning start as they defeat Evesham by six wickets.

Great batting from Jaimen Rudd (99) and new signing John Stanaway (86) supported by a captain’s performance of 52 not out and 4-37 from Paul Thomas ensured victory got Cookleys season off to a winning start. Adam Nicholls also chipping in with 3-61.
