STEVE Horton rounded off a fine season for him by regaining his Kidderminster and District League open singles title in convincing style.

The doughty defender defeated his Bromley team-mate Jason Thompson 3-0 to clinch victory on finals night at Kidderminster Harriers Social and Supporters Club last week.

Horton was in fine form as he had just won the Over-50s National Doubles Title with Adrian Pilgrim at Tipton the previous weekend.

The opening match of finals night saw Steve Dorrell of Harriers D defeat Tim Giles of Bewdley Institute C 3-1 to win the Super Veterans Singles for the over-55s.

Then the Bromley pair Horton and Thompson added the Veterans Doubles title to the Open Doubles they had won earlier with a 3-0 victory over Cookley B duo Mark Fiddian and Chris Hewitt.

The Restricted Singles trophy, for players outside of Division One, was an all Holy Trinity affair between Alan Willetts and Tony Bartram. The game went the full distance with Bartram squeaking home 11-7 in the fifth.

Ryan Cooksey was presented with the Balmoral Award for being the most promising youngster of the season.

The teenager was spotted playing the game in his garden by his neighbour Ted Dalton who invited him to join Bewdley Institute.

The 16-year-old has been playing for just a year and has made excellent progress this season. He reached the final of the Handicap Singles against Harriers H’s Paul Darby and the match turned out to be the closest of the night.

After a shaky start, Cooksey got his big forehand working and appeared to win easily. But the fact that he had to give his opponent 19 and a half points meant he triumphed by just half a point - the smallest possible winning margin in this event.

The guest of honour for the night was Roger Stephens, who was celebrating his 50th year involved in table tennis.

Roger, who played for the MEB for 20 years before moving to the Harriers club, also coached for many years and was county junior coach for Worcestershire.

Bromley were crowned Division One winners while Harriers X took the Division Two title.

Horton also took the award for most wins in Division One, being undefeated in 63 matches, while John Cumbers won 61 from 72 for Wordsley A in Division Two. Special mention went to Chris Metti of Harriers C, who was undefeated in Division Two but played fewer games than Cumbers.

Tonight (THUR) is the league’s annual meeting at the Harriers Social Club with all teams required to send a representative.

A full list of results with pictures will be posted on the Kidderminster League’s website.
