SAMURAI A collected an excellent haul of seven medals from their eight players at the Heart Of England Championships at Walsall.

With all of the Midlands top clubs there, the Wyre Forest club had the most silverware of any from the region despite a lot of their top players being absent.

Olivia Turner led the charge once again.

Two maximum point wins in her first two contests put her into the semi-finals and another spectacular victory propelled her into the final.

Her England squad opponent in the final did her best but Turner was unstoppable and another maximum point win earned her the gold.

Leah Grosvenor swept into her final with her usual devastating style and a series of good wins.

Unfortunately she lost her way in the final against a player she has beaten convincingly in their last three meetings and was caught by a late score and had to settle for silver.

Bryony Griffiths started off with a spectacular win and then ground out some more tight wins to reach her final, but lost to a good throw and also had to settle for silver.

Nathan Gallacher then made it a hat-trick of silvers for Samurai.

Some good early wins saw him into his final against an old rival. But a very tight contest with just one score in it went against Gallacher after he attacked and his opponent countered.

Matt Hemer was on good form and had three emphatic wins to reach his semi-final.

The last four clash was an excellent contest and with no scores at the end of normal time it went into extra-time.

Hemer threw his opponent but then rolled over him and controversially the score was given against him. But he swallowed his disappointment to come back strongly to win the bronze.

The two “Green Goblin Squad” girls, Lauren Fletcher and Sophie Deeming-Lane, showed how much they have improved with two excellent performances.

Deeming-Lane just missed out on the medals, but with three fine wins out of her four contests, Fletcher won a bronze, which was her first major event success.

Finally, Laura Dangerfield was fighting well in the senior women’s section and reached the semi-final before finally being eliminated, although she had done well enough to earn the bronze.
