KIDDERMINSTER Carolians go into the North Midlands Shield aiming to repeat last season’s excellent run.

The Marlpool Lane side reached the final last year and gave a very strong Bridgnorth side a run for their money before losing 18-13.

On Saturday, they welcome Shrewsbury to Kidderminster in the competition (3pm ko).

Director of rugby Phil Knowles said: “We had a very good run in the competition and played very well against Bridgnorth last year and we’d love to do that again. We’re missing a couple of wingers and captain Chris Pinner has broken his hand but what’s pleasing is that we have guys who can come in.”

Will Varley (hand injury) and Josh Winfield will miss the clash, while Pinner is set for a four to six week lay-off while the broken hand he sustained heals.

Freddie Morgan stepped in as scrum half in the absence of Pinner and did a good job.

KCs have made a solid start to the season in the in Midlands Division Two West (North).

After a narrow loss to Stafford, KCs have bounced back by defeating Stourbridge Lions and Veseyans.

The club has also opened its doors to the public for the Rugby World Cup, with big crowds watching the action and enjoying refreshments.

The club and beer tent will be open through the day showing all six games, including England’s clash with Australia (8pm ko).
