THERE were some old and some newer faces from Samurai competing at their open Masters and Senior High Grades tournament, held at the British Judo Olympic Training Centre at Walsall.

Brothers Tony and Ian Leroux returned to action after many years away.

Both were Samurai members before moving to Milton Keynes some 25 years ago as children, but they continued to represent the club through into adulthood.

Ian looked sharp in the Masters section before losing in the final to win silver.

Older brother Tony took a gold medal in his veterans category, and there was an additional silver for Rob Alloway who lost to a Scottish player in his final.

Mark Flello missed out on a bronze in his weight group, losing to a Torquay player in the semi final and then to a Banbury player for the bronze.

Paul Moss, 55, added a bronze in his weight group after some determined work.

The second part of the competition was organised in grades rather than weights. Sam Bravo and Lewis Mills clocked up three and two wins, respectively, in the brown belt section.

Ian Leroux won a second silver medal in the first level back belts, while in the senior women’s category, Bryony Grifiths did well in the brown belt section, winning three contests by maximum points to take the bronze.

There was an all-Samurai clash in the women’s second level black belt and above section.

Laura Dangerfield and Sarah Newbury fought in the semi final, with the latter winning and then sealing gold. Dangerfield was given silver.
