BAXTER College student William Richardson has been called up to the England Cross Country team racing in the 72nd running of the Juan Muguerza event in Spain.

The Birchfield Harriers athlete (pictured) has been selected as part of a four strong line-up in the junior men’s section.

The event, held in Elgoibar, attracts the best runners from across the world.

The Hartlebury resident’s selection is another feather in the gifted long distance runner’s cap.

Richardson was called up by Great Britain selectors just before Christmas to take part in the Great Edinburgh international.The event saw teams from Britain, America and Europe in action.

In the six kilometre junior men event, Richardson came seventh and was also the second member of the GB squad to cross the finish line.

Overall a Britain and Northern Ireland team, led by Mo Farah, came first.

Richardson’s been in good form over the last 12 months and dominated the Midlands Cross Country Championships last January.

He also competed at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa last summer.
