KIDDERMINSTER Golf Club's Karen Greenfield won a thrilling finale at the Worcestershire & Herefordshire Ladies’ County Golf Association County Championships at Worcestershire GC.

Greenfield saw off the challenge of home favourite Lucy Walton to take the title.

Walton had went two-up early on but Greenfield nibbled back her lead and forged ahead.

By the 16th hole theWyre Forest player was two shots ahead before her opponent produced a fabulous eagle three on the 16th sinking an enormous putt, closely followed by another eagle concession on 17.

The match was all square coming up 18 and spectators were hungry for more, anticipating a journey down the 19th.

Two excellent shots from Greenfield put her not far from the pin and after Walton had landed in a hazard, she sealed one-shot victorty.

The match was played in a great spirit by both ladies and with Ros Weston as referee.

Greenfield first won the title 15 years ago and, although she has won the Championship on three previous occasions, she felt her 2016 victory was no less sweet.

In qualifying for the match-play element of the championships, teenager Lucy Walton, herself already Ladies’ County Champion on more than one occasion, this week won the best gross prize in the 18-hole Grace Boulton Salver and the Kate Brinton Trophy for the best gross score (158) over 36 holes.

County Captain Sue Birch said: "I thought it an excellent finale to three days of superb golf at a great venue finishing, as it did, in front of the clubhouse with spectators all around.

"I congratulate both finalists on the quality of their play and The Worcestershire Golf Club for the superb condition of the course during the week.

"Special praise was extended to course manager Steve Lloyd for his team’s efforts in countering the effects of a severe thunderstorm on the day of the quarter-finals."
