THERE will be considerable Kidderminster interest in next week's British Open at Royal Troon after Spaniard Scott Fernandez booked his place in the prestigious event.

Although born in Spain, Scott is the son of Kidderminster's Julie Salmon and grandson of Percy Salmon who hails from Bewdley.

Scott, who won the Spanish Junior title in 2011, contests his first ever British Open after producing rounds of 70 and 66 at the final qualifying event at Gailes Links.

With just three places up for grabs and a 72 strong field, Scott pulled out all the stops to claim second spot, four shots behind winner Oskar Arvidsson, but one ahead of the celebrated Colin Montgomerie, who also qualified for the British Open.

Scott can now look forward to his world ranking making a massive rise . He was previously 991st in the world, but two top 10 finishes in his previous five starts on the European Tour have already moved him up 500 places.

Mum Julie added: " My dad, Percy and Scott's god father Derek Fincher from Stourport together with all my family and friends couldn't be prouder of him!
