JUDO: A host of Samurai’s juniors excelled at the West Of England Open Championships at Weston-Super-Mare — led by Callum Spencer, who took the gold medal.
Spencer won four contests with a good mix of standing judo and groundwork to take the gold.
Cerys Jones added a silver with a performance that epitomised her brave determination, and there were good efforts from Dillon Walker, who finished seventh, and Dan Hickinbottom, who finished ninth.
Darcie Hancocks also added a comfortable gold medal in the older juniors section, while Matt and James Hemer both had a good effort, with Matt finishing fifth but James just edging bronze.
Olivia Turner was in superb form to win a bronze medal, beating a player in the bronze play-off who had always previously beaten her.
But perhaps more importantly she twice came within inches of beating the player currently ranked British number one in her weight group.
