STOURPORT Swifts boss Mark Phillips is confident his team can progress quickly this season as long as they cut out the individual mistakes.

Swifts battled for a 1-1 draw against 10-man Alvechurch last Saturday, but slipped to a disappointing 4-0 defeat at Highgate United on Tuesday night.

Phillips said: “We have been very inconsistent so far this season, but that can happen as the players gets used to each other.

“Overall I’m pleased with how we have done. We are very good on the ball and pass it around well, but we need to improve how we play off the ball. That is something we will be working on because we are too open at times.

“If we can sort that and cut out the individual errors then we should be able improve as the games go on.”

Ben Maund’s penalty saw Swifts come from behind against Alvechurch before spurning a host of opportunities at Highgate.

Phillips added: “We did well at Alvechurch, even though we were up against it for large parts.

“Against Highgate, we had the chances to win the game but didn’t take them. We then made mistakes and got hit on the break.”

Stourport will have a break from league action on Saturday when Smethwick visit Walshes Meadow in the FA Vase (3pm kick-off).

Phillips has a fully-fit squad to pick from and will have to assess an ankle injury to defender Ben Priest ahead of the weekend.
