STOURPORT Hockey Club's under-16 girls have a shot at a national title after booking their place in the England Hockey Championship finals.

The finals will take place in the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre inside the Olympic Park next month.

The girls were convincing winners of the qualifying pool in the regional finals by sweeping aside all opponents without conceding a goal.

In the opening game the girls secured a 6-0 win over Oxford Hawks with goals coming from a Lorna Mackenzie brace and one each for Esme Gibson, Charley Atkinson, Cerys Preston and Sophie Thompson.

A win in their next match against a strong looking Harleston Magpies would secure a strong hold on the pool. Again Stourport came out firing and took an early two goal lead through Mackenizie and Preston and although Harleston threatened on a couple of occasions keeper Jess Biddle remained a spectator.

Thompson made it 3-0 in the second half leaving the girls in complete control of the group.

Oxford and Harleston could only manage a 1-1 draw which meant the girls qualified with a game to spare.

They completed their pool matches, with a convincing 4-0 win over Saffron Walden with two goals a piece for Gibson and Mackenizie.
