NEWER Samurai Judo Club players were in action at the Nottingham Low Grades Open Championships, bringing home four medals.
Three of these came in the boys categories. Scott Hulbert, won silver in just his second competition, had two good wins in the quarter-finals and semi-finals to reach his final, which he was dominating until he got caught with a counter-throw.
Mateo Allen and Joe Blanchfield were in the same category. Like Scott, Joe was in just his second competition but did well to reach the semi-final after two good wins, but he then lost to the more experienced Mateo, which made it three wins for Mateo.
He lost the final and had to settle for silver whilst Joe came back well to win the bronze.
Harrison Flello nearly made it four medals for the boys, but finished just outside the medals in fifth place.
In the girls, Katy Jennings and Lola Grosvenor were in the same weight category, which was a large group with some very good players in it.
Lola eventually finished fifth and Katy seventh, but both fought well and showed promise for the future.
One of the Samurai parents was also making his competition debut, Anthony Haywood showed good gripping and balance and gained a bronze.
