SPARTANS basketball team have secured title joy in their first season.

Wyre Forest's newest side play home games at the LQ Arena, Windermere Way, Stourport, and have been crowned West Midlands League Division Two champions.

Spartans, who train at Kidderminster Youth House, Bromsgrove Street, were formed in May last year when Wyre Forest Flames and Droitwich Spartans merged.

They capped a fine season with a 68-49 success over Mavericks last weekend.

Spartans got off to the start hitting four three and playing great team defence with Matt Law, Josh Cooper and Jake Kelly grabbing most the rebounds.

The hosts had a quieter second quarter before stretching their lead further in the third.

The final quarter belonged to Spartans and Craig Link who scored a big two and played some great defence, which was supported by some great ball movement by Ryan Crump, Simon Ahmed and Dan Roby.

Coach Matt Coles was delighted with the championship success. He said: "It's great for the whole club and a really good achievement.

"We knew we had a strong side but you still need those players to gel together.

"To be a new side and to win the league in our first years is a superb achievement and it's not about one or two players it's thanks to every single person that has played for us this season.

"The first team winning is also a massive boost for all the other age groups as well.

"We have grown so much in such a short space of time and now have 120 registered members across the men's side and the age groups.

"We've just started under-15, under-17, under-10 and under-12 side sides too. We had 46 children attend the under-12s recently and we must be the fastest growing club in the whole country.

"This win gives us the perfect foundation for us to continue to grow."

Spartans will look to add to their silverware in the league's play-offs.

They will play at home in the quarter-final on a date to be announced. For more information visit spartans-basketball.co.uk
