SAMURAI Judo Club's women stood out at the Senior High Grades and Master Championships in Birmingham.
Fighters from around 50 clubs from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland competed but it was the Kidderminster-based club’s students who shone through.
Charlie Price, despite being extremely light, won several contests convincingly in the brown belts section and was unlucky to finish fifth, just outside the medals.
Sarah Biles was in stunning form in the black belts section, carving her way through into the final.
In the final she faced Nicky Haywood, who also regularly trains at Samurai, and Biles won with a maximum point throw using club-mate Kate Walker’s trademark throw. Rachel Griffiths added a bronze with an excellent display of determination.
In the men’s brown belts, Craig Wilkes fought his way into the semi-final with five good wins before losing, but came back well to win the bronze.
Meanwhile, in the second level black belts section, Tony Leroux finished fifth, while three good wins saw Ben Newbury into the semi-finals and a very close defeat against a Welsh powerhouse. But he bounced back to win the bronze.
At the Finland Open, Kate Walker defeated a top Spanish fighter, before losing to the eventual bronze medalist from France.
