Goals galore for Stourport

THERE were goals galore for Stourport Hockey Club's ladies seconds and fourths teams over the weekend.

The seconds went down 5-2 at the hands of Leamington as they made a losing return to the Midlands Conference South.

But in the Worcestershire League Division Three, the fourths romped to an 11-0 victory over Bromgrove’s third team.

The weekend had been hit hard by frosty conditions, with the first team’s Midlands Division One clash at Leighton Buzzard and the thirds’ Worcestershire Division Two match against Old Halesonians called off.

Stourport’s second team found the going tough against Leamington, as they slipped 4-0 down by half-time at home.

The hosts started the second half much stronger and Holly Lashford pulled a goal back.

Stourport were creating the better chances in this half but their player of the match, keeper Sally Ann Smith, was still required to make some brilliant saves to prevent Leamington from extending their lead.

On the hour mark, Shelley Tromans made it 4-2 and spark hopes of a fight back but a fifth goal for Leamington late on ensured their defeat and kept them fifth in the table.

The fourths were in goal-laden form as they routed Bromsgrove at home and significantly improved their goal-difference.

The massive win also ensured that Stourport remain second place, just two points ahead of Ludlow.

The home side extended their advantage through Kate Bailey, but the visitors still looked capable of pulling this match round only to find themselves thwarted by the Stourport defence.

Teri Baron made it 3-0 with the first of her hat-trick, and then Louise Marshall made amends for previously putting a golden opportunity wide by scoring the first of her brace.

With only two minutes from the safety of half-time Bromsgrove may have thought they wouldn’t concede anymore before the whistle, but Bailey and Stourport’s player of the match Kate Walker scored to make it 6-0 by the break.

Stourport started the second half with the same hunger for goals, with Marshall, Baron and Connolly extended the home side's lead.

Baron completed her treble, before Caroline Wilson finished off the rout.

In the County League, relegation battling Kiddeminster ladies drew 2-2 with Pershore at the weekend.

After a six-week break because of Christmas and poor weather, they were still struggling to field enough players and could only just put out a 10 strong team.

Keeper Julie Rowe made one save in the first half but the game hotted up after the break.

Good play by Kay McDonald set up Kari Smith, who fired Kidderminster ahead.

Pershore’s extra player was beginning to tell and they levelled the scores.

Smith fired Kidderminster ahead again but Pershore ensured it was honours even late on.
