WYRE Forest athlete Jamie Dancyger returned from the World Summer Games in Athens with two silver medals.

The 25-year-old, who is a member of Special Olympics Worcestershire, won silvers in the 3,000 metres and 4x400m relay while representing Great Britain.

Dancyger got the ball rolling for team GB in the 3,000m. Despite finishing fourth he was promoted to second after it was discovered two different divisions had competed in the same race.

Divisioning takes place in advance of the competitions, grouping athletes on their ability rather than disability levels, creating a level playing field for competition. Each sport is broken down into distinct levels of ability to make it as fair as possible.

Tony Pert Jones, who was Britain's head of athletics, said: “We were all a bit disappointed when Jamie crossed the finish line in fourth place, so you can imagine our surprise when they put him on the second place podium during the medal ceremony.

“It turns out they ran two divisions in the same race and once they separated the results Jamie was awarded a silver for his division.”

He then was part of the 4x400m relay team which took silver.

A strong GB team had an inspiring week of sport, with the 157 British athletes returning back home jubilant- accompanied by 53 volunteer coaches and five management, with a staggering total of 187 medals, including 72 gold, 63 silver and 52 bronze.
