SEVEN impressive juniors from Wharton Park Golf Club have been selected for the National Skills Challenge at The Warwickshire Golf Club on Thursday, August 16.

Through hard work, two official challenges and much determination they’ve beaten 1,480 children nationally to take part in this prestigious event, which is endorsed by Lee Westwood.

Winners of each age category go forward to the national final at Woodall Spa Golf Club, Lincolnshire in September.

Jonathan Riley competes in the under-8 boys, with Georgia D’Araujo and Ellie Balmer in the girls. Charlotte Balmer, Hannah Styles and Charlotte Voysey will be competing in the nine to 11 girls category, while Katy Matthews will test her mettle in the 12 to 14 year tour group.

They will be challenged to complete 10 different disciplines ranging from bunker shots to full swing.

Coached by the club professional Angus Hoare and assisted by three level one PGA coaches, the juniors have gone from strength to strength this year.

Their kit has been kindly sponsored by HIRE-IT of Kidderminster.

Meanwhile, after weeks of uncertain weather the members of Cleobury Mortimer were out in force to contest the double roll up in glorious sunshine.

Scoring over the two days was steady with Josh Alcock, Simon Johnson, Mike Jacks and Malcolm Millichap putting in a great effort.

However, Dave Leach blew the field away with a score of 40 points to win by four shots.

Leach’s score was also the lowest gross of the weekend at level par.
