Blacker makes winning return to former club

WYRE Forest welcomed back former member Phil Blacker as he and a large contingent of riders took part in the club’s midweek time trial.

Blacker, who now rides for the Jewson trade team, won the 10-mile race in 22 minutes 23 seconds.

Andy Convery led the home riders with a time of 22.49 from Paul Darby and Dave Meacham who recorded 23.22 and 23.43 respectively.

On the previous weekend, Convery won the club’s 25-mile time trial championship when he finished 12th overall with a time of 57.07 in the Echelon/VTTA promoted event.

He was followed by Darby (16th in 59.23), Adrian Manning (19th in 59.45), Jon Howard (20th in 1.00.12), Dave Wood (21st in 1.00.14), Ian Connolly (27th in 1.01.53) and David Prior (35th in 1.07.48). Convery, Darby and Manning won the team award.

The club’s tandem duo of Chris Morris and Phil Hunt won the 10-miles time trial promoted by Bicester Millennium CC. Held over four laps of the perimeter of the RAF base at Weston-on-the-Green, the pair had to contend with a strong wind and heavy rain for the final two laps, but ran out easy winners with a time of 20.46 beating their nearest rivals by 38 seconds.

Three club riders braved Saturday’s weather to ride the Severn Valley Velo 10-mile time trial held near Salford Priors.

Manning recorded a time of 23.04 for 20th place, David Prior finished in 24.57 for 35th place while Mick Gray took the over-75s prize with 46th place in a time of 29.09.

Dave Wood had dry and warm conditions for his Sunday morning ride in the Welsh Championship 50 miles time trial, but a strong wind blowing through the valleys caused several riders to retire.

However, Wood persevered and despite the conditions was rewarded with 19th place from an entry of 80 riders and a personal best time of 2.03.59.
