Cookley seal promotion
3:00pm Thursday 6th September 2012 in Sportsview
COOKLEY sealed promotion to the Worcestershire League Division Two with a 30-run win over Harborne on Saturday.
The 24-point haul means the Division Three leaders booked their place at the higher level for the first time in seven years.
Paul Thomas hit 38 as they made 186-6 and then took 6-66, including a hat-trick, to dismiss Harborne for 156.
They will win the title if they can see off relegation-battling Wyre Forest rivals Kidderminster in Saturday’s away clash.
With second-placed Harvington, three points behind, up against mid-table Stourbridge Social, the title race has gone down to the wire.
Captain Gary Mills said: “We’ve been top all season, so it would be disappointing to end the season second.
“We’ll be going out to win the game, and there’s a party planned for the evening, so it will be bit flat if we don’t manage to do it.”
In second XI Division Two, Cookley are on course for another promotion after beating Harborne.
A superb 93 from Ben Southall saw them post a fine total and with Harborne at 55-5 victory looked certain but Terry (51) and Warwickshire under-15s star Usman Hussain (68) threatened to spoil the promotion prospects.
Cookley got out of jail thanks to Danny Soley running Hussain out, and they need seven points from the last game at home to Netherton to secure back-to-back promotions.
