Stourport crash at home once again
5:00pm Friday 5th October 2012 in Sportsview
STOURPORT Ladies again couldn’t make the most of home advantage as they lost 2-0 to Bristol Firebrands.
A shaky start enabled the visitors to pressure the Stourport goal early on but the chances were parried away by Sophie Woods in the home goal in National Conference West.
Stourport calmed the play down and enjoyed some periods of possession after then and nearly took the lead when Sade Gerald was denied at close range.
But the visitors went ahead in controversial fashion when the ball was scrambled home, after the home players had stopped when Heidi Devey was hit on the hand and the ball appeared to strike a visiting players foor.
Stourport came out fighting the second-half and Sarah Cavendish twice went close to levelling.
Rene Johnson also went close before Bristol scored on the counter-attack.
Stourport will hope for better this Saturday when they travel to Taunton.
Goals from Liz Warne and Bethan Merriman ensured the seconds notched their first win of the campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Warwick. They face Edgbaston at home this weekend.
The thirds were beaten in their first Worcestershire League game of the season, as visitors Worcester escaped with a 3-1 win. Stouport enjoyed plenty of pressure in the first-half but couldn’t find a way through and trailed 2-0 at the break.
Abbie Yapp got them back into it with a goal early in the second period but Worcester restored their two-goal cushion almost immediately.
Both sides face each other again in the reverse fixture this weekend.
There was better news for the fourths, who opened their season with a 2-1 win over Kings Heath. The visitors were on top in the early exchanges and took the lead after 10 minutes but Stouport hit back, levelling before half-time through Chey West.
West then finished off a superb short corner routine to snatch the win in the second period.
The fifths had a day to forget as they were beaten 6-0 by Barford Tigers.
This Saturday, the fourths host Kings Heath while the fifths entertain Bromsgrove.
