THE latest generation of Samurai Judo Club boys continued to make impressive progress with 10 medals at the club's open Boys Minimon Championships.

The event attracted entries from thirty clubs from as far away as Brighton Hill, in Hampshire.

Xavier Widdowson was first on the mat for the Samurai and clinched silver in the under 32 kilos category.

Two maximum point wins saw him into the semi-final where he won by a high score against an Amersham lad, but his opponent in the final caught him with a good throw.

Widdowson was also invited to have a go in the higher grades, where he added another bronze to his collection.

James Hatherill and Jack Nelson both did well in the under 34 kilos category to clinch bronze medals.

In the under-38 kilos, Andrew Talbot and Tom Wilkes stormed through to the semi-finals, before bowing out against players they had already beaten and settlnig for bronzes.

It was unfortunate that Joe Chase, Ed Coleman and Sam Woodward were all in the same category, as they ended up canceling each other out to some degree.

Woodward won the top prize with a final victory over a Bristol rival, while Chase and Coleman bagged bronzes.

Ian Curley-Floyd breezed through to the final of the over-60 kilos category where he came up against a bigger, more-experienced opponent and had to make do with an impressive silver.

Meanwhile, four Samurai juniors have been promoted to new colours. Benji Connor gained brown belt, while Rosie Tramontana and Amelia Hancocks moved to blue and Charis Hancocks progressed to green belt.

It keeps the Hancocks sisters ahead of their mum, Sue, currently a senior orange belt chasing her daughters up the grades.
