STOURPORT pensioner Ron Harvey was in brilliant form at the European Indoor Championships as he scooped gold in the veterans age category.

The 74-year-old showed he’s still got the skills in Spain as he emerged triumphant with a score of 740 points over three rounds at the start.

This was not the first time he’s tasted glory on the international scene.

He has also won silver at the World Championships in 2006, European outdoor gold in Finland as well as indoor gold in Hungary two years ago.

However, Harvey was unhappy that his winner’s medal was a metallic black, the same as the second and third place silverware, and asked a friend to paint it gold when he returned to Wyre Forest.

“The tournament had about 20 people around my age competing and I was delighted to win,” Harvey said.

“Unfortunately, all three medals were black so a friend of mine has painted it gold.”

A keen fan of medieval history who attends the re-enactment of the battle of Agincourt every year, Harvey has been an archer for nearly 40 years.

He is also a member of newly-formed West Mercia Archers, who are based near Worcester but are hoping to find a member home near Shatterford this year.

Harvey also finished second at the UK Championships in Bedfordshire.
