CRAIG Payton hopes Bewdley Town can put their difficult season behind them by lifting the Worcestershire Infirmary Cup on Saturday.

Town take on Malvern at the Langland Stadium in the final (3pm ko) in their last match of the season.

A cup would provide a silver lining to a season which has been blighted by a horrendous fixture backlog.

Bewdley barely played a game between December and February because of the worst winter in years and then played a host of games to catch-up.

However, they managed to end their season in the West Midlands League Premier in eighth, although they did finish on the same points as seventh-placed Pegasus.

Joint manager Payton said: “The season we’ve had has been one of the worst during my time at the club so to come through it and finish joint seventh was an achievement.

“Now we’ve got a chance to win some silverware and end the season on a high note.”

Bewdley will be under pressure to emulate the success of a mixed under-18s and 21s side, which edged out Malvern Town on penalties to win the Worcestershire Junior Infirmary Cup on Sunday.

However, the team have been lifted by the news that senior players such as Richard Costello, Shaun Wright and Chris Hough were set to stay on for next season among a host of senior players.

Town will have a revamped looking squad for the 2013-14 season in the West Midlands League Premier after blooding a handful of under-21 players during their hectic end to the campaign.

“This will probably be the fourth side Brian Lacey [joint manager] have built but I believe we’ll be looking stronger,” added Payton.

Payton was also quick to praise Town’s hard-working club secretary Steve Godfrey, who dealt with the fixtures troubles efficiently.

“Steve’s worked miracles this season, he’s had to put up with a nightmare this season,” said Payton.
