FRAN O’Connor is gunning for glory at the British Swimming Championships next week.

The Kidderminster swimmer heads into the tournament at Ponds Forge in good shape.

The 22-year-old, who has been training with Wyre Forest Swimming Club, is in confident mood for the biggest tournament of the year for the disabled swimmer.

O’Connor, who has cerebral palsy, has set her sights on improving on her promising performances at the British Gas Disability International in the S7 50-metre freestyle and 100m freestyle.

Father Kevin O’Connor said: “Fran is in very good shape, she’s fit and her preparations have gone well.”

At the Disability International, she finished fifth in the 100m freestyle a time of one minute 21.97 seconds, shaving two seconds off her time in 2012. She was also faster in the 50m freestyle, setting a time of 37.84. In the 400m freestyle, Fran finished second in her category in 6.07.34. O’Connor is also eligible now to compete for the Republic of Ireland after all the paper work was completed.

The squad going to the IPC World Championships in Montreal this August has already been selected but she will be able to vie for a place at future tournaments.

She qualifies through her father, who is a retired and popular GP in the town.
