Delight for Darcie in retaining title
8:00pm Thursday 15th August 2013 in Sport
UP-and-coming Samurai starlet Darcie Hancocks stormed to her ninth gold medal of 2013 by winning the West Of England Open Championships for the second year running in Swindon.
The 11-year-old won her first two contests comfortably to top the pool, spectacularly dismissed her semi-final opponent in seconds.
Hancocks controlled the final to take the gold medal against a Sussex player.
That takes her to eleven medals in total for 2013 to date, but Nathan Gallacher remains just one ahead of her in top place in the county medal table after he won the silver in his category.
James Hemer added a bronze, as did Hettie Tinsdale.
Brendan Crummy had some good wins but missed out on the medals, while Bryony Griffiths had to withdraw after hurting her leg when she was looking set for a place in the final.
In the senior women, Laura Dangerfield finished fifth.
Rob Alloway gave an excellent performance in the veterans section of the London International Open to claim silver.
