Classy Connor leaves it late
11:04am Thursday 31st October 2013 in Sport
Whittington 11, Stourport 12
A LAST-gasp try by Connor Haywood ensured Stourport recorded their second victory of the season in the Midlands Five West (North).
Undeterred by a missed penalty, Stourport backs got a handle on the ball and Jack Ward ran in for an unconverted try.
The visitors dominated the scrums throughout the game, but more so in the latter stages of the first-half when they drove the home team’s pack over their own try line, only to knock on at the vital moment.
The first half ended at 5-3 following a Whittington penalty.
A well-worked try and penalty kick saw the hosts edged 11-5 ahead in the second period.
But the foundations of a strong line-out and scrum finally gave the Stourport backs their chance.
Adam Wyton collected the ball behind the Stourport game line and ran 70 metres finally being felled.
Before the home team had time to form a defence the ball was out to debutant Haywood, who scored under the posts.
Rory Meehan kicked the conversion to seal a narrow but deserved win.
Meanwhile, Chaddesley Corbett hammered struggling Birmingham Barbarians 76-7.
In the Midlands Four West (North), Cleobury Mortimer recorded their fifth straight win as they saw off Bishop’s Castle and Onny Valley 24-17.
