WYRE Forest Phoenix edged out Welland 3-2 in the Hereford and Worcester Girls and Women’s County League.

After four defeats in a row, which included an 8-1 loss to Hereford and 11-0 defeat at the hands of Ludlow, Forest got back on track with a much-needed win.

Phoenix made a strong start and saw a host of chances thwarted by a combination of keeper and woodwork in the opening 25 minutes.

Kirsty Roberts fired Phoenix ahead on 30 minutes.

However, a mistake at the back allowed Welland to make it 1-1.

Another defensive error saw Welland take the lead, but Roberts bagged an equaliser before the break.

The second half was a hard-fought affair with Phoenix having the better chances.

But Sadie Brown’s well-struck left-footed shot fired Wyre Forest back into the lead.

They managed to hold on to the victory to secure a much-needed three points.

However, the win came at a cost after Chase Pheysey-Hoban and Stef Lambert both sustained hamstring injuries.

Once again, our opponents picked the impressive Emilia Sinden for the girl of the game.

The Ladies host Drakes Broughton on Sunday before travelling to basement side Bridgnorth the following weekend.

Wyre Forest Phoenix are sixth in the table.
