Final pairing clinch league

THE Inter-Club Winter League – involving four teams – came to the boil when the final match in this round-robin event was staged at Burlish Park.

The host club’s pairings were in great form winning all their six matches and it looked for a while as if this would be good enough for them to win the title.

However, the last match out on the course – involving pairs from Little Lakes duo Rob Wilding and Phil Smith and Wharton Park pair Alan Bishop and Frank Wheatcroft – ended all square and that point apiece proved just enough for Wharton Park to deny them by one point.

This was the only match out of the 12 played on the day to be halved and meant Wharton finished with 27 points from four events and Burlish 26, while Bransford had 23 and Little Lakes 20.

The competition format was altered this year with the four 12-man teams playing at each of the clubs involved on the same day, and they will now do battle for one more time on Championship Day at Wharton Park today, in a team Stableford competition.

This final event is for another team prize, the Championship Trophy, and there is also a trophy for the top individual player. Wharton Park will also be presented with the Winter League Shield.

Team scores from the previous Winter League: Bransford: Wharton 10, Little Lakes 6, Bransford 5 and Burlish 3; at Little Lakes: Bransford and Burlish both 7 and Little Lakes and Wharton both 5; and at Wharton Park: Bransford and Wharton both 7, Little Lakes 6 and Burlish 4.

l March saw the return of the popular Texas scramble format to Cleobury Mortimer. With overcast skies and the prospect of afternoon rain it was the early starters who posted the best scores.

Winning their seventh scramble out of the last eight played it is becoming a season of dominance from the team of Gary Mann, Nigel Williams, Aaron Booton and Martin Bower. The team to beat, they posted a score of 56.9 to win by a massive four shots.
