KATE Mason was the leading light for Bewdley TAGB Tae Kwon Do at the English Championships as she scooped three trophies.

The club sent a 26-strong team to Worcester Arena on Sunday and came away with 12 pieces of silverware.

After her glory at the World Championships last year, Mason inspired fiancé Neil Meredith to join and on Sunday he earned his very own first national title in the Men’s yellow belt middleweight sparring division.

Mason also won the bronze trophy for her pattern display and joined forces with defending champion from the last tournament, Maz Leno and new recruit Olivia Tonks to storm the Ladies teams divisions section and win 18-5 in the final round.

Tonks, 15, had bravely stepped up into the Ladies’ division, but with the support of clubmates she held her own.

Liam Maiden won the bronze trophy in the cadet male sparring and Rosie Ashmore took silver in the girls’ middleweight division. There was success for Vijay Patel who clinched silver in the men’s heavyweight and just missed out on a second trophy for his pattern.

Paris Orme took bronze in a higher weight division as she opting to step up a level.

Joseph Tonks won his first trophy in the boys’ middleweight sparring.

Amelia Bentley-Hughes, George Chance, who unfortunately had to step out due to injury, Jessica Chance, Millie Clough, Izzy Evans, Jack Day, Dylan Kirk, Ella Kirk, Thomas Maund, Shaun Mayall, Blaiz Orme, Ravi Patel, Paul Tonks, Steve Thomas, Rhianna Sobainski and Josh Sheppard all played their part.

Instructor Katie Billingham said: “To think many of the days winners have only started this year, it is amazing to see what can be achieved with perseverance and determination. We are starting training this week to defend our titles at the Welsh Championship this year.”
