GIFTED young fighter Jerry Mongan has powered into the semi-finals of the ABA National Schoolboy Championships with a series of impressive victories.

The 14-year-old traveller from Stourport will now meet Liverpool’s Sean Arkwright of Salisbury Boxing Club in the 52kg weight category.

Mongan, who is home schooled, reached the same stage last year, but was overpowered by John Johnstone.

He had gone into the last four fight on the back of several byes in 2013.

The teenager is certainly more battle hardened after winning all five of his fights to reach the same stage.

The Priory Park pugilist saw off Wolverhampton’s Connor Hinks, Mitchell Lowe and then sealed the Midlands title with a unanimous points win over the Birmingham Irish fighter Jack Tuite.

He then cruised into the last eight by seeing off Bobby Carter from Hartlepool Boxing Club before seeing off Murtaza Nadeem on Saturday.

Brother Michael Mongan said: “Jerry’s come up against some very good fighters, but he’s been getting better with every round.

“Last year he had a few byes, but it didn’t do him any good.

“Now he’s in great shape.”
