GIFTED young Stourport fighter Jerry Mongan has earned a call up to the England squad.

The 14-year-old defeated Levy Lewis in County Durham on Saturday with a spit decision.

Success in the selection eliminator means Mongan will now represent England in the Tri-Nations tournament in May.

The best young fighters from England, Scotland and Wales will be fighting for home nations bragging rights.

Jerry’s brother Michael said: “Jerry’s absolutely over the moon to be representing his country.

“It’s every boys’ dream and he’s really looking forward to it.”

The teenager had too much for his opponent, winning the first round.

In a closer second round, Mongan broke his opponent’s nose.

Lewis, who fights for St Mary’s in Kent, bravely continued in the third round but the Wyre Forest fighter’s victory was assured.

Mongan trains at Dudley-based Priory Park Boxing Club, has had a fantastic season.

He won the English Schoolboys title in the 54kilogram category two weeks ago, seeing off Wayne Owen from Berkshire’s Pinewood ABC to secure the golden Lonsdale gloves.

Jerry is also only the second boy from Stourport to ever win the title and the first since the 1990s.
