European bound: Claire Cashmore

Awaiting squad nomination: Amy Smith.

CLAIRE Cashmore bounced back from the disappointment of missing out on a place at this year’s Commonwealth Games by booking her place at the IPC European Swimming Championships.

The 25-year-old achieved the qualifying time in the SB8 100m breaststroke at the British Para Swimming International meet and has been included in the squad for the championships, which will be held in Eindhoven this summer.

Cashmore was not at her fastest because she is in the middle of a radical change in her training programme.

Working alongside new coach Rob Greenwood, she has focused on a strengthening programme which is hoped will yield quicker times in the summer.

She said: “I’ve had a lot of changes this year, I’ve got a new coach and so many things have been different.

“It’s a work in progress and hopefully by the summer I will be knocking out some good times.”

She was also faster than at the British Championships the week before but still managed to win the SB8 breaststroke.

However, Cashmore did not go under the required time for the Glasgow Games, which is quicker than the one minute and 20.39 seconds she recording to win silver at the London Paralympics.

The Commonwealth Games are the tournament she has not competed at and the swimmer has submitted a written appeal.

Meanwhile, Amy Smith is awaiting the announcement of the Commonwealth England squad in May after a solid display at the British Championships.

The 26-year-old was second in 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly and third in the 50 free. While not achieving qualifying times she did so in the 100m freestyle relay.

There was heartache for Fran O’Connor at the International meet as she suffered a hip injury. She now targets the Nationals this summer.
