STOURPORT Boat Club bagged five wins at the Evesham sprint regatta on Sunday.

After a winter disrupted by floods and cancellations, the club sent 11 crews to the first regatta of the season at their county rivals.

They were up against boats from Bristol, Oxford, Hereford, Warwick and Carlow from Ireland to name but a few clubs.

Stourport’s juniors did well despite many making their debut.

Matt Gould and Tom Smith have never raced before and steered a great course while Dan Rowley sculled well but just lost out in his race against Hinksey. Likewise, Lauren Rhodes and Kate Sweeney showed great skills to reach the semi-finals.

Sam Branford and Callum O’Reilly recorded the club’s first win in the junior 14 category, sculling very well to overcome Windsor Boys School.

Young sculler Jasmine White showed maturity to make the final but the exhausted junior, who had already won a semi-final re-row after she had capsized, suffered the same fate again.

In the Masters Men, there were victories for the F crew of Pete Lloyd, Stu Peace, Keith Barwise, Ian Hough and cox Noreen Moses, as well as the C boat of Tim Haywood, Pete Spencer, Daz Ford and Mick Pain and cox Leslie Beddow.

Stourport split the senior squad into two fours for the event, and with two brothers in the two opposing boats and two sisters coxing, the rivalry was intense.

Bruce McClaren, Nic Danby, Alex Barnett, Richard Collins and cox Leslie Beddow (pictured) were triumphant.

Stourport’s fifth win of the day came from top Masters sculler Duncan Gwilliam who was never under pressure, winning all races including the final against Evesham.

The club are now looking forward to Shrewsbury Regatta this weekend.
