KIDDERMINSTER pair Jacob Jackson and Hayden Griffiths won medals at the Midlands Youth Championships.

The teenagers helped Ellesmere College Titans record their best ever results from tournament at Corby’s 50m pool on Saturday, in May with five podium places.

Jackson, 15 , excelled in several events and reached four finals.

He came fifth in the heats of the 50m freestyle in 25.91 and fourth in the heats of the 100m butterfly in one minute and 0.16 seconds.

Jackson was just piped to the finish unable to hold on to first placing in the heats of the 50m backstroke in 28.94 taking silver in the final with the same time.

But he made up for this in the very last event when he dominated the 50m butterfly, winning the heats with 27.55 and improving on his personal best even more in the final to become Midlands Champion in 27.08.

Meanwhile, Griffiths, 17, qualified for seven events and reached three finals.

He was equally as busy, taking fifth place in the final of the 50m back in 29.17 and bronze in the 200m individual medley, improving his previous time by over three seconds from his second place in the heats to record 2:13.94.

Griffiths also gained a bronze medal in the 200m backstroke and rounded off the championships. swimming to 1:02.55 in the heats of the 100m backstroke.

He went on to take sixth place in the final of the event.

Former Wyre Forest Swimming Club member Olivia Gardner had plenty to celebrate with a very busy programme.

She swum in eight events and several finals over the two days, taking bronze in the 800m freestyle in 9:17.00 and coming runner-up in the heats of the 200m freestyle in 2:08.24.

She went onto finish fourth in the final of the 200m and take third place in the heats of the 400m individual medley, securing fifth place in the final.

Gardner also narrowly missed out on a medal in the 400m freestyle with 4:28.41 to gain fourth position in the final.

Head coach Alan Bircher said: “The team managed the largest number of medals at a youth championship which was pleasing. We’ve worked hard this past week for the various competitions coming thick and fast towards the business end of the season.”
