A FIREFIGHTER from Kidderminster demonstrated how he can take the heat with a fine performance at the European Cross Triathlon championships in Sardinia.
Paul Bailey, 39, who is commander of white watch at Kidderminster fire station, tackled the testing 1,500 metre sea swim, 30 kilometre multi-terrain bike course and 10km run along the ruffed Sardinian shoreline.
Despite being up against a top field of European competitors, he completed the course in three hours and three minutes and was first home for Britain in his age section.
That was enough for him to qualify for the World Championship in Zittau, Germany later in the year.
His next challenge will be on July 20 when Bailey tackles his first ever iron man event.
He faces a challenge in Bolton, where he will take on a 3.8km swim, 189km bike ride and 42km marathon.
He was set the challenge, which he is to complete before he turns 40 in December, and will be taking part for the Emily Jordan Foundation.
The cause helps individuals with moderate learning and physical difficulties and has already raised funds for a base in the town.
