Bewdley players return to winning ways

First published in Sport

BEWDLEY returned to winning ways with a convincing victory at Coombs Wood in Worcestershire Division Two.

On a hot day with a lightning outfield, Coombs Wood unsurprisingly chose to bat, but were soon in trouble against a fiery opening spell from Callum Wilson, who took the first three wickets to fall.

Bewdley’s two spinners then took over, and the home side had no answer to the guile of Simon Mauger (3-27) and Jack Mills (4-34).

A total of 138 was woefully inadequate in the conditions, and Bewdley were left with 57 overs to get the runs.

Paul Beard and Nick Wilkinson got the innings off to a brisk start adding 45, and although Beard and Mauger fell in quick succession, this only allowed Rob Combes to continue his good form with a sparkling 53 not out containing five fours and four sixes.

l Cookley bagged an unexpected but welcome victory against promotion challengers Oldswinford.

Andy Gorol the key with a fine 4-16 with the visitors who had elected to bat all out for 144.

Cookley won by seven wickets with Al Ray top scoring with 32.

The seconds suffered a losing draw against Redditch.

The Kingfishers had scored 273-6 but a first half century (51 not out) for Charlie Pestridge, 17, and 40 by Lee Shewry guided Cookley to 193-7.
